After a tough season of M-League, it was great to see Vipers had the opportunity to win back to back State mixed netball titles. Vipers Men’s team made the preliminary final, however could not get the team together to push for the grand final this year.

The mixed team finished top of the ladder after remaining undefeated through the main season. In the semi finals, Vipers lost to South Morang after many players were unable to play. To make the grand final was always going to be tough, with many players busy with other commitments so close to Christmas. However after a bruising preliminary final Vipers got their chance to defend their title and with a near full strength team on deck for the GF it was sure to be a cracker.

A slow start in the first quarter was not the game plan and South Morang pushed the score out lead by 4 goals very quick. The umpires were making it a one sided contest at times, but with some accurate shooting from Sophie O’Shae and David Chisolm the team went into the first break down by 4 goals. Talk of changes at quarter time were left aside, as South Morang went on another surge early in the 2nd. Vipers were not converting chances and as a result were punished for inaccurate shooting. An injury time out was called after South Morangs GA was hit by Emma Lappins elbow, and changes were made to the line up. Sophie O’Shae was moved from GA to WD which she had never played before but being a big game player Sophie moved positions and created 3 intercepts before half time to get the team back in the game and chance heading into the last two quarters.

Still down by 4 the team kept working hard, however much of the hard work was being undone by some controversial umpiring calls. Wil Jamison was brought on and had an immediate impact, but it was not being shown on the scoreboard, as for every hard earned goal the Vipers scored, they could not break South Morang spirit. The scores stay goal for goal in the 3rd and Vipers were once again 4 goals down at the last break.

The last quarter was hard work as both teams were gunning for the win and trying to put the game beyond reach of each other, however South Morang had been in a similar situation in last years finaland walked away disappointed but desperately wanted to forget last years heartbreak with a win. Contacts were becoming heavier with the added pressure and with fatigue setting in Wil Jamison intercepted to provide a easy score for Vipers which was quickly followed closely by another from Emma Lappin and saw Vipers draw level as David Chisolm nailed it in at GS. Only 4 minutes remained and for the first time in the match Vipers took the lead 47 – 46. It was tight and South Morang were chasing hard, pressuring every ball.

Vipers however never looked back from that point and maintain their point advantage to go on to win the game again on the back of a intercept from Wil Jamison assuring that the Vipers hold the title of M-League Champions for another year and go BACK TO BACK.

Congratulations to the entire team on their successful season and back to back titles

Division 1 too good!

Vipers Oakleigh netball team have suffered back to back losses with a 20-12 loss on Sunday night. The team which was at full strength was no match for their opponents - Minky’s. After such a promising start to the season, although only grading games the team have suffered consecutive losses and are left pondering what can they do to turn around their fortunes and get back to that winning way.

The team however can take some positives from the game in that they turned the ball over on many occasion through poor passing and silly errors which at this level of netball get punished. The team worked well together and continued to plug away but had no answer and will be left to reflect during the week on what needs to be changed before the nect round.

The Albert Park team once again continued their unbeaten season as they received a forfeit during the week which pleased some of the team as they were not looking forward to the 9.40pm time slot allocated. Their opponents must have been feeling the same as they ended up calling it early and leaving everyone home in the warmth of their homes.

The team will match up this week in the early game against the 2nd placed team and the top of the table clash.

The roving reporter looks forward to another week of exciting netball from these two teams playing in their first season and also playing in the premier division both comps have to offer.

Vipers have suffered their first loss in the Oakleigh Netball competition withe an absolute crushing defeat at the hands of title favourites Team Louis 50-5. This defeat is the first loss for the netball teams in 2009 and one which will not be forgotten quickly.

The team having displayed brilliance in the grading games and handing out some of their own crushing defeats have found themselves in the top division and well things do not look rosie at all if Sunday nights game is anything to go by. The team can take something from the game with four of their regular line up interstate on rep duties which left a team of fill in players to maintain the unbeaten record, this was not the case as Vipers continually turned over the ball through inaccurate passing or the old stepping penalty which with the higher grade came the higher quality umpire which didn’t miss a beat. The team having been demoralised will have all their regulars back on deck for next weeks game which will give a true indication on whether they can match it in the top flight in season 2009.

Albert Park Vipers continued their winning success with a narrow win over a 6 player team on Thursday night. The team displayed some patches of brilliance in the absence of Head Coach and defensive strategist Jen Galea, who was off celebrating her 25th birthday. The game was a game of 4 quarters like every other week of which Vipers seemed to have their noses in front for most of the match. This was possibly the toughest of all the teams played this year. Simialr to the Oakleigh team they find themselves in the premier division due to outstanding performance early in the season.

Vipers first season in Netball will show the abilities and skills of the players as they strive for domination in a new sport foreign to most of the players.

The team of Suzy, Brooke, Mel, Jen, MC, Crano & Youngy plus help from fill in players have helped the team win all four matches played to date, the team have beaten all on their way, including last years premiers 17 -12 in what many would describe as a early preview of the Grand final which is still 18 weeks away. The season is still far from over but the team have gelled into a DOMINATING unit since there pre seaosn training camp and look destined for greatness and a winners cheque in June

The second Vipers Netball team which will play at Oakleigh on Sunday nights have also commenced their campaign and the team of Mick & Tanya Lovett, Mon and Burkey, Jen, Andrew Burke, Smash and Youngy blew away their opponents in the 3rd quarter on Sunday night to DOMINATE the match and eventually win 21 -11. The team having played together for the first time tried a few combinations before they settle on the make up of the team before the first round after easter, one thing is for sure that Youngy is dominating the space down back and keeping opposition shooters at bay. This team will also look to improve on their pre season training camps held during the off season and claim the winners cheque.
