Vipers flying start

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Vipers State League netball teams have kick off the new season with the Men’s and Mixed teams both registering wins in the opening 2 rounds of the competition.

The Men’s team have made light work of both their opponents with crushing wins over the South East Blackhawks 68 to 29 and 65 to 50 last week. Best on court performances in the first two rounds were Louis Tomorapolous and Bala Lange.

The Mixed team have had a similar start to their season with victories over the Hume#1 44 to 41 and a round two victory 54-44 with the teams best players being Sam Holt and  Will Jamieson

The team are also looking very smart in their new Vipers uniforms which have raised the bar in on court appearance. The teams play each Wednesday night at the State Hockey and Netball centre in Royal Park.

The first Women’s netball team have also commenced their new competition at Albert Park with the first week of trials just passed the ladies put on a netball clinic for their opponents and allowing just 6 goals to be scored against them. Although this could prove a ploy from opposition teams who do not wish to play in the higher grades of the competition and tank during the trial weeks to ensure a easier grade. The Vipers girls however do not have the same vision and wish to test themselves against the best Albert Park has to offer and will continue to play fast and free flowing netball to ensure that the fans get their money worth each week.

Keep down to the Albert Park Indoor Centre to watch these budding netballers in action every Tuesday night.

Curtain falls on Fairytale

Friday, July 17th, 2009

The Albert Park Mixed netball team have been knocked out of the finals race after a convincing win by the Bundy Bears last night at the AP Indoor Centre against Vipers.

The team was full of confidence heading into the clash as the last time these two teams meet, more then half the regular list was absent requiring fill in players from their lower grade team to play in the A Grade comp. On that night the team also went down but giving valuable exposure to some up and coming players in the A grade competition much like State of Origin provides to lower graders in the Rugby League when their players are away representing their State.

The team gathered early in the sheds for a warm up andteam talk on team tactics before  they ventured to court 3 for the preliminary final. The Bears where somewhat of an unknown to Vipers but with plenty of height at both ends of the court it was going to be a tough match. At completion of the National anthem  the capacity crowd settled into their seats for this clash an it was game on. (more…)

Albert Park Netball Finals

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Vipers Albert Park mixed netball team have made the A Grade finals in their first year, this is a outstanding achievement for a group or regular touch players. The team have performed well throughout the season having only dropped 3 games all season, twice to the current competition leaders and once to the team they will face off in this Thursday night’s sudden death semi “The Bundy Bears”.

The team have found some good combinations with Smash up in goals, Youngy and Jen down back and the running mid court of Suzy, MC and Brooke not to mention Renee the regular fill in for the team for when Crano was unable to play due to footy commitments. These combinations have created their fair share of problems for opposition teams with plenty of ball movement up and down the court. The team need to focus this week on the 3 seconds you have to pass the ball instead of the free flowing game they currently play, probably from watching to much of the ANZ championships on TV to pick up some pointers on the weekends.

This game will be a cracker and one not to be missed so if you are free on Thursday night @ 7.45pm then come down and support the team.

Vipers wishes the team the best of luck in their endeavours for a GF spot next week.

Don’t forget Vipers are currently recruiting for more social players to field teams for both Mixed and Ladies. Check out the Netball post for more details.

Oakleigh Team beaten

Division 1 too good!

Vipers Oakleigh netball team have suffered back to back losses with a 20-12 loss on Sunday night. The team which was at full strength was no match for their opponents - Minky’s. After such a promising start to the season, although only grading games the team have suffered consecutive losses and are left pondering what can they do to turn around their fortunes and get back to that winning way.

The team however can take some positives from the game in that they turned the ball over on many occasion through poor passing and silly errors which at this level of netball get punished. The team worked well together and continued to plug away but had no answer and will be left to reflect during the week on what needs to be changed before the nect round.

The Albert Park team once again continued their unbeaten season as they received a forfeit during the week which pleased some of the team as they were not looking forward to the 9.40pm time slot allocated. Their opponents must have been feeling the same as they ended up calling it early and leaving everyone home in the warmth of their homes.

The team will match up this week in the early game against the 2nd placed team and the top of the table clash.

The roving reporter looks forward to another week of exciting netball from these two teams playing in their first season and also playing in the premier division both comps have to offer.

Winning streak ends

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Vipers have suffered their first loss in the Oakleigh Netball competition withe an absolute crushing defeat at the hands of title favourites Team Louis 50-5. This defeat is the first loss for the netball teams in 2009 and one which will not be forgotten quickly.

The team having displayed brilliance in the grading games and handing out some of their own crushing defeats have found themselves in the top division and well things do not look rosie at all if Sunday nights game is anything to go by.  The team can take something from the game with four of their regular line up interstate on rep duties which left a team of fill in players to maintain the unbeaten record, this was not the case as Vipers continually turned over the ball through inaccurate passing or the old stepping penalty which with the higher grade came the higher quality umpire which didn’t miss a beat. The team having been demoralised will have all their regulars back on deck for next weeks game which will give a true indication on whether they can match it in the top flight in season 2009.

Albert Park Vipers continued their winning success with a narrow win over a 6 player team on Thursday night. The team displayed some patches of brilliance in the absence of Head Coach and defensive strategist Jen Galea, who was off celebrating her 25th birthday. The game was a game of 4 quarters like every other week of which Vipers seemed to have their noses in front for most of the match. This was possibly the toughest of all the teams played this year. Simialr to the Oakleigh team they find themselves in the premier division due to outstanding performance early in the season.

Vipers first season in Netball will show the abilities and skills of the players as they strive for domination in a new sport foreign to most of the players.
