Red hot racing at the Women’s Grand Prix

March 6th, 2013

Suzy in action at the Women's GP Rnd 3 Casey Fields 3 March 2013The 3rd round of  Cykel Events Women’s GP returned to Casey Fields on Sunday 3rd March and the riders were once again faced with (the usual) hot temperatures and blustery conditions which would prove testing for all the riders.

The Cyclespeed Vipers team of Suzy Barrett, Kate Scarlett and Elizabeth Dornom were super motivated for the individual prologue which would be used to grade the riders for the afternoons criterium races.

Suzy and Kate both showed signs that their recent training and hard earned tan-lines are starting to pay dividends by posting competitive times in the race against the clock.

With her Ironman Melbourne showdown only a few weeks away, Elizabeth wisely chose to avoid the hustle and bustle which can go hand-in-hand with criterium racing and focus on the prologue. Elizabeth produced a sizzling hot lap to record a time that placed her well up the overall leader board.

Following the prologue, both Suzy and Kate found themselves graded at the pointy end of a very even Division 3.

Kate looking comfortable - Women's GP Rnd 3 Casey Fields 3 March 2013Right from the start, the racing was on for young and not-quite-as-young as all riders seemed to fancy their chances, throwing caution to the ever present wind in an attempt to come away with the win.

In only the third lap of the race, Kate dropped the hammer and put the field under pressure by driving the pace hard at the front.  Kate’s huge turn resulted in several riders unable to hold wheels and ultimately falling out of the main group.  Meanwhile Suzy sat comfortably in the bunch while her team mate thinned out the field.

For the remainder of the race, the Vipers girls were attentive and rode in good positions which allowed them to respond to any threatening attacks.

Despite attempts from multiple riders to break the race up, it appeared as though the race would come down to a bunch sprint.  With the riders approaching the incline leading to the finish, Suzy launched from the bunch and quickly had opened a gap.

The group attempted to react but it was too little to late – Suzy had unleashed a blistering sprint to record the Cyclespeed Vipers team’s maiden victory in fine style.

While the remaining divisions did not feature and of the Vipers girls, both races were impressive displays of cycling which showcased the high-speed, tactical and aggressive racing that the women’s divisions are fast becoming known for.

The Division 1 race in particular was a fantastic, attacking race which kept the gathered crowd guessing which move might be the decisive one.  In the end it was Nicole Whitburn who prevailed with a thundering sprint finish to win the round and firm up her grip on the individual series lead.

A big thanks go out to Russ and Andrew at Cyclespeed for their wonderful support and advise to the team.  If anyone is in need of a relaxed and friendly bikeshop please drop by to the shop on Gardenvale Road, Gardenvale and have a coffee with the guys.  Tell them the Vipers girls sent you and they’d be happy to have a chat over a coffee.

Congratulations to Rob from Cykel Events for putting the series together.  Now in it’s second year, the series continues to get better and better.

Thanks also to Kirsty Baxter for her great photos.

The 4th and final round for the series to be held on Saturday 23rd March at Yarra Boulevard Burnley will feature an on-site café and a Prosecco Bar.  Be sure to keep an eye on the Vipers Facebook page for more details so we can some members down to enjoy a great afternoon of racing and cheer on the Vipers girls!!

Winners are grinners!
